I made this, it's better than a rheostat/baybus because those produce heat, cost more money, and can't handle big fans. I went my hardware store and bought a 3way lightswitch for $1.20, cut a hole in a 5.25" bay, and mounted it. The wiring is slightly complex, I have mine set up like this

Y - always +12V
B - either ground or +5V, depending on switch position
B - always ground
R - always +5V

here are some pics I whipped up, you need to open a new browser window and copy/paiste, the host does not like remote linking and I do not have a better host.
Code:
http://www.theforumisdown.com/uploadfiles/0103/switch%20plate.jpg
http://www.theforumisdown.com/uploadfiles/0103/switchinside.jpg

how it works: when the switch has the negative fan lead at ground, the total voltage is 12-0=12V
when the negative fan lead is at +5 you get a resultant of 12-5=7V

you can have fans always 7 or always 12 by moving the pins on the molex connecters to the always 5 or always ground leads

enjoy.

hmmm kay, sounds good. tell me if you see any editing mistakes though

would you also host some more pics if I would make them? i made a new switch too, it's a dual 3way, so one switch is CPU and one is case. it's nice and neat.

This is the easiest way possible to use a switch for a low/high switch on fans.....
what do you want? on off for fans? on/off computer?

real smart guys........
if there's a failure in any of your fans
you will instantly send 12v trhough your whole pc!!
yes...that would be 12 v to your precious motherboard.
12v to your precious vid card
12v to your precious cpu!!

question:

how? explain how that could POSSIBLY happen

maybe if you absolutly cannot soldier or forget to use quality UL certified electrical tape, or you leave some loose threads or something, but if it's all done cleanly it is perfectly safe.

my new one is a double, and I've increased the gauge on the wire to high gauge speaker wire.
